We just had a delightful lunch with Dr. Allan Armitage, the plant guru from the University of Georgia, who was visiting our neck of the woods for Longwood Gardens’ Lilytopia exhibit. As a well- known writer, speaker, teacher and researcher, Dr. Armitage travels throughout the world to study annuals, perennials, cut flowers and greenhouse crops in various climates. The latest Mother’s Day survey from the National Retail Federation shows flowers are the most popular gift (65.2% of respondents plan to hit up the florist for Mom), followed by taking mom to a restaurant for brunch or dinner (51.8%), and jewelry (26.2%). In fact, data from AboutFlowers.com shows that Mothers Day sees the second-highest floral sales volume of all the holidays, falling only behind Christmas.
