Goodbye first lawn, hello first garden

Michelle Obama has really added a new freshness to the White House atmousphere. Imagine adding a organic vegetable garden to the south lawn of the White House. This could start a whole new movement of families getting together and breaking ground in thier own backyards to grow healthy vegetables to put on the family dinner table. Heck if this keeps up hopefully we can grow a healthy economy while we are at it.

Ed Begley Jr. at the Great Green Expo!

I had a great time talking with Ed Begley at the Delaware Great Green Expo held at the Chase Center this past Saturday! Begley is recently known for all of his environment-saving antics on the show Living with Ed (which he shared the spotlight with his wife) and is currently starring in Gary Unmarried. He spoke to a rather large (standing) audience and took many questions about how he is saving the planet little by little! He was then kind enough to stay around, sign signatures and take pictures with his pro-environment fans…count me in as one! Read the rest of this entry »

Farm in Your Yard

Always wanted a backyard veggie garden but don’t know a petunia from a parsnip. Then here’s a plan for you. The owners of Happy Cat Farm, Tim Mountz (terrain’s nursery manager and tomato expert) and his wife Amy Bloom, have started a new venture with a twist: They come to your home and help you design, build and maintain your own veggie garden. Their approach is really cool. They meet with you to talk about what food you really like and would love to grow. Then they build a sustainable edible landscape for you, which they maintain weekly — meaning they water, weed and harvest. When they’re finished, they leave a box of produce from your own farm. If you want ot help, that’s great. But you can do as much or as little as you want. (And you may want to protect get some of the Liquid Fence Dual Action Rabbit Repellent we talked about earlier.) Tim or Amy are in Kennett Square and can be reached at Happy Cat Organics or call 610-217-7723. To find a local harvest near you click CSA . Now if I only had sun! Suzi Read the rest of this entry »

A yellow Knockout, just in time for spring planting

Jessica Damiano’s award-winning garden blog gets to the root of things. She wrote this week about Sunny Knock Out . . .
If you like yellow roses, you might have to sit down for this one. Knockout roses, a gift to gardeners a few years back, has unveiled a yellow version of its shrubby, disease-resistant, zero-maintenance bush.
Three years ago, I bought two red single Knockouts (they’re hot pink, really, but the tag says Rosa Radrazz). They grew so fast and bloomed nonstop from June through December, requiring no deadheading, no powdery mildew treatment, no pruning, nothing. I thought I’d died and gone to heaven.
